We have learned of the passing of Bob Forbes, the husband of former parishioner and Council President, Mary Forbes. Bob was a great friend of St. George, often times volunteering his labor at our fundraisers.  Our prayers and condolences go out to the Forbes family.  May his Memory be Eternal.

Our December Charity Collection brought in a total of $216.00 for the Fisher House, an organization that provides a “Home away from Home” for wounded veterans and their families at VA hospitals around the country. Thank you for your generosity!

We recently learned of the following deaths:  Fr. Joseph Kreta died in Arizona on February 2. He was the father of Fr. John and Evelyn (Leka) Kreta.  Martha Tennant died in Bridgeport on February 3. She was the mother of Martha Todeasa, wife of Fr. Cornel Todeasa.  Memory Eternal!

We have learned of the passing of Deacon John Zarras on Sunday, April 1st.  Deacon John visited with us and served Divine Liturgy numerous times at St. George.  He had been, for many years, a member at Holy Trinity Greek Church in Bridgeport and most recently was serving as a deacon at Christ the Savior Church in Southbury. May Deacon John’s memory be eternal!

Christ is Risen! Truly, He is Risen! is the traditional Orthodox Christian Paschal greeting.   The St. George community recently completed the service cycle of Great Lent, Holy Week with the celebration of midnight Pascal Liturgy.

We extend our thanks to the many people who helped to make Lent, Holy Week and Pascha a beautiful and meaningful celebration: Mary Nastu for donating the flowers for the Cross on the Petafi in memory of her brother, Arthur Lika. Pandora Dionis for decorating the Holy Cross for the Petafi. The women and children who decorated the Petafi on Holy Friday morning (it was done in a record-breaking time of 1 hour and 30 minutes!) Bob Lazar, Cheryl Themel and Jennifer Goetz for decorating the church for Holy Pascha. Ron Dougiello for the flowers that beautify the inside of the church. The Teuta Ladies Society for the beautiful red eggs. Nancy Hurd for the donation of a candle on the Petafi for the blessings and health of her family. Mary Nikola for the donation of a candle on the Petafi in memory of her husband Steve. Cantors Van Michael and Charles Soter for their dedication and singing at every service. The Choir for their preparation and singing throughout Holy Week and Pascha. Our volunteer readers. Bob Lazar for his assistance in the sanctuary. The altar servers for their time and assistance. Sue Wight for organizing the Children’s Egg Hunt and Coffee Hour. Those who simply came to pray and celebrate the services.

Matthew Masek and Jeannine Bellizzi were married at Saint Thomas Catholic Church in Oxford, Conn., on April 21st. Their marriage will be blessed in the Orthodox Church at a later date. Matthew is the son of Karen and Albert Masek. Many Years to the happy couple!

Many thanks to our “Myrrhbearing Women” who decorated the Petafi (Christ’s Tomb) on Holy Friday and who removed the flowers for distribution to the faithful Holy Friday evening: Gloria Athanas, Vi Bowe, Sharon Buzi, Janet Caliendo, Pandora Dionis, Pauline Dionis, Mary Nastu, Dolores Nauchy, Andrea Snedegar, and Jo Ann Soter. Thanks also to Hope and Philip Caliendo who cleaned the glass covering the holy Icons.

 The Holy Synod of the Orthodox Church in America at its regular Spring Session elevated our hierarch, Bishop Nikon, to the rank of Archbishop. He is now known as “His Eminence, Nikon, Archbishop of Boston, New England and the Albanian Archdiocese.” His Eminence will celebrate the 10th anniversary of his consecration as a Bishop on May 25th.  God grant him Many Years!

The Monroe/Trumbull Relay for Life was held on Friday and Saturday, June 8th & 9th.  Our congratulations go out to our parishioners who participated on the teams, and all others who supported the fundraising activities to make this first-time effort in our parish community a success.  A special thank you goes out to Sharon Buzi who coordinated the entire program for St. George.

On Thursday, November 29th, 19 parishioners gathered in the Church Hall for an afternoon of food and conversation. It was a wonderful opportunity to spend time together in fellowship. We would like to thank those who prepared the meal: Father Dennis, Cheryl Themel, and Laura Chadwick. Since it was so well received, we are planning to hold another one after Pascha.
